The Wedding Invitation

Have you ever been to a wedding where everything was perfect? The music, the food, the joy of the bride and groom? Now imagine the most anticipated wedding in the history of the universe. The Groom has waited thousands of years. The Bride passed through deserts, fires, and persecutions to reach this moment. At last, the day has come.

Revelation 19 opens with a roar. John hears "a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven." They shout a Hebrew word that has not appeared in the New Testament until now: Hallelujah! It means "Praise Jah (Jehovah)." They shout it four times. Why so much euphoria? Because the "Great Harlot" — who corrupted the earth and killed God's servants — has been judged. Justice has been done. Evil has been eradicated. The universe can breathe a sigh of relief.

The Contrast of the Garments

The high point of the chapter is the presentation of the Bride. "Let us be glad and rejoice... for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready" (Rev. 19:7).

God makes a point of contrasting the Bride (the True Church) with the Harlot (the false church) we saw in chapter 34. Look at the difference in wardrobe:

The Harlot: Clothed in purple, scarlet, gold, and heavy jewels. Garments of ostentation and sin.

The Bride: "It was granted to her to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright" (v. 8).

Fine linen is simple, white, and durable. The text explains its meaning: "the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints." Here we find salvation's perfect balance:

Grace: The garment "was granted" to her. She did not buy it — she received it from Christ, as a gift. Without Jesus, we would be naked.

Works: The linen represents "righteous acts." Grace does not leave us paralyzed; it transforms us. The Bride "made herself ready." She cooperated with God, overcame sin through the power of the Spirit, and developed a character like that of Jesus.

The Wedding Feast Menu

The angel tells John: "Write: 'Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!'" (v. 9).

In Jewish culture, a wedding had three phases:

The betrothal (the contract): When we accept Jesus and the price (His blood) is paid. This has already happened.

The procession: When the groom goes to fetch the bride from her father's house. This is the Second Coming (which we'll cover in the next chapter).

The banquet (feast): The celebration lasting for days — in this case, the millennium and eternity.

You've received an invitation. It's right there in your Bible. But notice that there are two "suppers" in Revelation 19.

The Supper of the Lamb (v. 9): where the saved feast with Jesus.

The Supper of the Birds (v. 17, which we'll see later): where the vultures feast on the flesh of God's enemies.

Every human being will take part in one of these two suppers. Either you are the guest of honor at Jesus' table, or you are the main course at the banquet of death. The choice is yours.

John's Mistake (Forbidden Worship)

The vision is so glorious that John is overwhelmed. Overcome with emotion, he makes a serious theological mistake: "I fell at his feet to worship him" (v. 10).

John tries to worship the angel. The angel's reaction is immediate and sharp: "See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren... Worship God!"

This is a fatal blow against any religion that encourages the worship or veneration of angels, saints, or created beings. In Heaven, not even the most powerful angel accepts worship. Only God is worthy. If any supernatural being accepts your worship, it is not of God — it's a demon in disguise.

The Prophetic Key (The Spirit of Prophecy)

The angel closes with a theological definition that connects the whole book: "...for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."

Remember the "Remnant" of Revelation 12:17? They carried two marks:

They keep the commandments of God.

They have the testimony of Jesus.

Now we know what that second mark is. Having the "Testimony of Jesus" is not simply talking about Jesus; it is possessing the Spirit of Prophecy. God's True Church, in the time of the end, is not silent. It is guided by the prophetic gift. God continues speaking to His people to guide them through the final crisis. The gift of prophecy did not die with the apostles — it is the light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns (2 Peter 1:19).

The wedding invitation is in your hand. The Groom (Jesus) has already paid every expense. The dress (His righteousness) has already been purchased. The table is set.

The only thing that can keep you out of this feast is your love for Babylon's "old clothes." The Harlot offers a cup of wine that leaves you drunk and sick. The Lamb offers a banquet that lasts forever. The bride has already made herself ready. And you? What's still keeping you from being ready?
