It Is Done

There are two moments in the history of the universe when God says the words: "It is done" (or "It is finished").

The first was at Calvary. Jesus, bleeding on the cross, cried out: "Tetelestai!" (It is finished). There, the price of sin was paid. Legal victory was won. The second happens here, in the Seventh Bowl. The seventh angel pours out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice comes out of the throne of the temple, saying: "It is done."

This time, it isn't a cry of pain — it is a cry of decree. At the cross, Jesus secured salvation. In the Seventh Bowl, He executes the liberation. It is the moment God says: "Enough. The reign of evil is over. I am reclaiming what is Mine."

The Air Strike (The Atmosphere)

The text says the bowl was poured out "into the air." This is significant. Air is what everyone breathes. Air surrounds the entire planet. The earlier plagues were localized (land, sea, rivers, sun, throne). The Seventh Plague is universal. There is no bunker, no deserted island, no space station that can escape it. The planet's atmosphere is saturated with God's final wrath.

Satan is called, in Scripture, "the prince of the power of the air" (Ephesians 2:2). God is invading enemy territory, saturating the atmosphere with His judging presence.

The Great Earthquake

Immediately after the voice from the Throne, nature collapses entirely. "And there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth" (Rev. 16:18).

Forget the Richter scale. Ordinary earthquakes topple buildings. This earthquake reshapes geography itself.

"Every island fled away": the hideaways of the wealthy vanish.

"The mountains were not found": military fortresses and natural barriers are leveled.

This earthquake symbolizes the total collapse of human institutions. The prophecy says "the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell." Everything man built without God — financial skyscrapers, imposing cathedrals, government palaces, technology systems — all of it comes down in minutes. Babylon, which seemed so solid, splits apart. The unholy trinity (Dragon, Beast, and False Prophet) disintegrates. The coalition of evil dissolves in panic.

The Cup of Wrath

Verse 19 says something terrible: "to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath." God "remembered" Babylon. For centuries, it seemed God had forgotten. Babylon killed the saints, changed the law, blasphemed, and grew rich. It seemed the crime paid off. But God has a perfect memory. The "cup" she forced the world to drink (false doctrines) is now handed back to her as judgment.

The Ice Bombardment (The Hail)

As if the earthquake weren't enough, the sky itself begins to fall. "And great hail from heaven fell upon men, every hailstone about the weight of a talent" (v. 21).

A biblical talent weighs between 65 and 110 pounds. Imagine blocks of ice the size of cement bags falling from the clouds. This isn't rain — it's heavy artillery. In the Old Testament, God used hail to fight His people's battles (Joshua 10:11; Exodus 9:23). Hail is God's weapon of war when He steps personally into battle (Job 38:22-23).

These stones crush what's left of the cities and the armies gathered at Armageddon. It is the final demonstration that man is powerless against the Creator.

The Final Blasphemy

You might expect that, at this point, with the world in ruins, humanity would humble itself. But the text closes with the saddest line in the entire volume: "And men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great."

They die cursing. This confirms that God's judgment is just. There are no "lost sheep" left among the wicked. Their character is irreversibly rebellious. If God gave them another thousand years, they would go right on sinning. The only solution left is the end.

The End and the Beginning

For the wicked, the voice that says "It is done" is a death sentence. But for the righteous, who are protected (likely watching this unfold, yet kept safe by God's hand), that voice is the music of freedom.

When we hear the thunder declare "It is done," we will know:

We will never be persecuted again.

We will never be tempted again.

We will never weep again.

The age of sin is over!

The earthquake that levels the cities of the nations is the very same event that reveals God's wrath and the arrival of the King. The surface of the earth lies in ruins, chaos reigning once again as it did before creation — formless and empty. Babylon's lights have gone out forever. Now only one light remains to shine on the horizon, though a thousand years still separate this chaos from the New Earth.
