Heat and Darkness

The world today lives in fear of "Global Warming." Scientists warn of a 1 or 2 degree rise in the Earth's temperature. But the Fourth Bowl makes climate models look like child's play.

Revelation describes a sudden, supernatural Solar Overheating. "Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire" (Rev. 16:8).

4th Bowl: The Traitor Sun

Why the sun? Remember the central conflict of Revelation 13 and 14: worship. The Beast changed God's Law and established Sunday (the day of the sun) as its sign of authority, in opposition to the Creator's Sabbath. During the final crisis, millions worshiped "the day of the sun" so as not to be killed or boycotted. They put their trust in the Beast's solar system.

Now God says: "You love the sun so much? Let's see who really controls it." The angel turns up the thermostat on the central star. The sun, which should give life, begins emitting deadly radiation. The text says men "were scorched with great heat."

It is the Law of Retribution again. They rejected the Creator of the sun, so creation turns against them. And the promise for the righteous? Psalm 121:6: "The sun shall not strike you by day." While the wicked suffer third-degree burns, the remnant is supernaturally protected — perhaps by clouds, or by the very glory of God, as Israel was in the wilderness.

The Reaction: Crystallized Hatred

You might expect that, feeling the fire, people would fall to their knees begging for mercy. But verse 9 shows something shocking: "And men blasphemed the name of God... and they did not repent and give Him glory."

This proves the door of grace is truly shut. Suffering does not change character; it only reveals it. Their hearts are so hardened by the Beast's deception that, even as they burn, they hate God. They behave like demons: they know God is powerful, but they refuse to love Him.

5th Bowl: Blackout at the Roman Capital

Suddenly, the scene shifts from fire to ice, from blinding light to total darkness. "Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness" (Rev. 16:10).

Here, the attack is geographic and institutional. Where is the "throne of the beast"? In the historicist interpretation we've followed since Chapter 24 (the Beast from the Sea), the throne is the seat of Roman power — the city of Christian Rome, commanding global worship.

While the rest of the world fries under the sun of the fourth plague, a supernatural darkness — the kind that could be felt, like in Egypt — falls specifically on the seat of the Antichrist. Picture the panic. The world leader who claimed to be the "Light of the World" and "Christ's representative" is now wrapped in dense darkness. His cardinals, bishops, and political allies are groping in the black.

The power systems fail. The gleam of gold and gems disappears. God has switched off the light of the "Eternal City." This exposes the fraud to the whole world. The crowds, seeing their leader powerless and in the dark, begin to realize they were deceived.

The Pain in Their Tongues

The text adds a gruesome detail: "They gnawed their tongues because of the pain." The darkness brings with it a chill or an unbearable mental anguish, added to the still-burning wounds of the earlier bowls.

Biting one's tongue is a sign of impotent rage. The tongue they used to blaspheme God, to decree the death of the saints, and to preach false doctrine, is now gnawed in agony. But again: "They blasphemed the God of heaven... and did not repent."

The Collapse of Trust

The Fourth and Fifth Bowls prepare the world for the end.

Nature betrayed humanity (the sun).

Religious leadership betrayed humanity (the darkened throne).

Those who placed their security in human government or institutionalized religion are now burned and lost in the dark. But those who placed their trust in the "Light of the World" (Jesus) have light in their dwellings.

The lesson for today is simple: do not worship creation (the sun/nature), and do not worship the system (the throne/the beast). Worship the Creator. Because the day will come when every artificial light goes out, and only those who carry the light of Christ within will be able to see the way home.
