The Final Judgment

Did you think it was all over after the Return of the King (Chapter 38)? Not so fast — there's still one final act to this story.

When I was a pastor in New Zealand, an elder and close friend of mine, who held a poetic, allegorical view of Revelation, once told me: "Pastor, there's no sanctuary in heaven, because Jesus Himself is the sanctuary. The New Jerusalem has no walls — that's just symbolism for security. I want to be able to travel through the sky out in the wild, not be trapped inside a city."

I understand the sentiment. Jesus truly is all we need. But the prophecy is more literal than we tend to imagine. God's Throne will be physically established on Earth, exactly where the Dome of the Rock stands today — the very place where Abraham offered Isaac. And the walls of the city? They will be real, and necessary, because they will separate us from history's last and most terrible battle.

The Third Coming (The Final Return)

After the thousand years of "vacation" in Heaven have passed, Jesus returns to Earth.

At the First Coming, He came as a baby, to die.

At the Second Coming, He came as Redeemer, to fetch His Bride.

At the Third Coming, He comes as Judge and Eternal King, to purify the planet.

And He does not come alone. John sees the "holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven" (Rev. 21:2).

Jesus descends, and His feet touch the Mount of Olives, the very place from which He ascended into Heaven. Zechariah 14 prophesied this: the mountain splits in two, forming a massive valley. The Holy City, in its dazzling glory, lands on this prepared site. Picture the scene: the capital of the Universe is now parked in the Middle East, over the ruins of old Jerusalem. Inside it are Jesus, the angels, and all the saved. Outside it, a devastated Earth.

The Resurrection of Shame

At this moment, Jesus gives an order, and the earth trembles once more. The Second Resurrection takes place. Every wicked person — from Cain to Judas, from Hitler to modern tyrants, and everyone who rejected grace — comes out of the grave. The prophet Daniel said they wake "to shame and everlasting contempt" (Dan. 12:2).

What a contrast!

The righteous were resurrected with glorious, youthful bodies.

The wicked are resurrected still bearing the marks of the disease and death they died with. They come back with the same rebellious mind, the same hatred, the same ambition.

Armageddon, Part 2: The Last Siege

Satan, who spent a thousand years alone and despairing, suddenly sees the earth filled with people again. His subjects have returned! His hope revives. He becomes, once more, the general of evil. He goes out to deceive the nations — Gog and Magog — for the final battle (Rev. 20:8).

He summons the generals who never lost a battle, the scientists who built weapons of mass destruction, the intellectual "giants" who mocked God. He points to the Holy City and says: "That city is ours. We are the majority. Let's take it!" They build weapons, organize battalions. It is the largest army ever to set foot on the planet. They march and surround the Holy City. But just as they prepare to attack, Jesus rises upon a great white throne, high and lifted up, visible to everyone, inside and outside the walls.

The Great White Throne (The Cinema of Life)

God destroys no one without explanation. Before the execution comes the judgment. "And I saw a great white throne... and the books were opened" (Rev. 20:11-12).

Above the throne appears a panoramic vision, in stunning high definition. Every human being — inside and outside the city — sees the story of their own life. They see the Cross. They see the sacrifice of Jesus. They see every single time the Holy Spirit tried to reach them, and they said "no." It all appears as if written in letters of fire. The wicked realize they are not inside the city not because God was cruel, but because they themselves chose sin. They see that God did everything possible to save them.

Every Knee Bows

Faced with the undeniable evidence of God's love and justice, the rebellion collapses. The prophecy is fulfilled: "Every knee shall bow to Me" (Isaiah 45:23).

Arrogant kings fall to their knees.

Militant atheists fall to their knees.

Even Satan, paralyzed by the glory of Christ, is forced to bow and confess: "You are just. I have lost."

It is not an act of loving worship, but an acknowledgment of the truth. The entire universe declares in unison: "Just and true are Your ways."

Fire from Heaven (The Death of Death)

Then comes the end. The Bible says "fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them" (Rev. 20:9). This is the biblical Hell. It is not an underground cave where the devil skewers people forever. It is a cosmic cleansing event.

The Earth becomes a vast lake of fire. Malachi 4 says the wicked will become "as stubble" and the fire "shall burn them up." Evil is annihilated.

Satan (the root): suffers more than all the rest, bearing the guilt for every sin he instigated, but is finally destroyed.

The wicked (the branches): are consumed and cease to exist.

This is the "Second Death." A death from which there is no resurrection. Impunity is over. Sin has been eradicated from the universe. The righteous, safe within the City, witness the fulfillment of Psalm 91: "A thousand shall fall at your side... but it shall not come near you." The fire that consumes sin purifies the planet, burning away the scars of pollution, wars, and death.

The Universe Breathes

When the last flame goes out, silence returns. No more screaming. No more blasphemy. No more devil. All of creation, which had groaned in the pains of childbirth, is now free.

The way is clear for re-creation. The planet, now purified by fire, is ready to be transformed into the Paradise it should have been from the very beginning.
