The Key to the Abyss

Have you ever felt that the world isn't just "bad," but that there's a supernatural evil at work behind the headlines? That things have crossed the line from human to demonic?

If you've felt that, you've grasped the mood of the Fifth Trumpet. Up to now, the trumpets have been severe warnings — hail, a mountain, wormwood, partial darkness. But in Revelation 8:13, an eagle flies through the sky crying, "Woe! Woe! Woe!" The word "woe" signals deep anguish, a funeral lament. The game has changed. We are no longer just dealing with falling empires (Rome); we are dealing with the abyss cracking open.

The Great Reversal

Jesus, in heaven, hears the martyrs' cry ("How long?") and begins to answer. God's answer is to allow evil to fully reveal itself.

John sees a "star fallen from heaven to the earth." Who is this star? Verse 11 leaves no doubt: he is the "angel of the abyss," whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon (the Destroyer). This star is Satan.

But notice a crucial detail in verse 1: "to him was given the key to the bottomless pit." The key was given. Satan did not steal the key. He does not own the world. God, who is always in control, permitted Satan to open the abyss. Why? So that the universe and humanity could see the true character of the kingdom of darkness.

In Revelation 20, we will see God stripping this power from him. But here, in the Fifth Trumpet, God is saying: "You want to rule without Me? Then show what your rule actually produces."

The Open Abyss and the Smoke

When the key turns, the text says smoke rose "like the smoke of a great furnace." In the Fourth Trumpet, the light was struck in only a third (partial darkness). Now, in the Fifth, the smoke darkens the sun and the air entirely.

Theologically, this represents the deepening of the Dark Ages. From the Middle Ages onward, the dominant religious system did not merely mix truth with error (wormwood); it completely blocked the view of Christ (the Sun). The smoke represents demonic doctrines, superstition, fear of hell, the selling of salvation, and the occultism that permeated Christendom. The world entered a period of darkness under demonic control. Where the light of Jesus does not shine, Abaddon reigns.

The Torment of the Unsealed

Out of the smoke come locusts with the power of scorpions. But they receive a strict divine order: "do not harm the grass of the earth... but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads" (Rev. 9:4).

This is fascinating. The target of the demonic attack is not God's faithful people (the sealed, whom we saw in Chapter 14 of this book). The target is those who serve the beast's system.

For centuries, apostate Christendom lived under a torment of conscience. Without the assurance of forgiveness, without the peace of Christ, people lived terrorized by demons, paying for painful penances, seeking peace and never finding it. The very system that promised salvation delivered torment instead — the scorpion's sting.

The "First Woe" reveals that serving Satan hurts. Sin promises pleasure but delivers bitterness and stings.

A Heavy Blow to the Darkness

It may seem strange, but the Fifth Trumpet is the beginning of God's answer. How so? Because it was in this very setting of unbearable smoke and tormented conscience that God raised up the Protestant Reformation.

When the darkness seemed to have won, men and women began desperately searching the Bible. The torment of guilt — caused by Abaddon's system — set the stage for the message of "Salvation by Grace" to explode like an atomic bomb of light.

The Fifth Trumpet was a heavy blow to the power of darkness because it exposed the bankruptcy of Satan's system. The world saw that, without the Bible, all that's left is smoke and pain.

Today's Choice

Today, the abyss remains open. Modern culture releases daily "smoke" to obscure Jesus: materialism, atheism, New Age spirituality, the occult. King Abaddon (the Destroyer) is still at work. His goal is to torment. Look at the rates of depression, anxiety, and emptiness in society — these are the scorpion's stings on a humanity without the Seal of God.

The prophecy makes it clear: there is only one protected group. "Do not touch those who have the seal of God." The only security against demonic darkness is not holy water or rituals — it is having the character of Christ sealed into the mind. Whoever has Jesus shines in the middle of the smoke.
