The Day the Sky Fell

In the previous chapter, we heard the martyrs asking, "How long, O Lord?" They wanted to know when justice would be done. In the Sixth Seal, God gives the answer. He doesn't answer with words; He answers by shaking the very structure of the universe.

It's as if God pounded the table of history and said: "The hour has come."

The Sixth Seal describes a series of spectacular cosmic events. To the modern reader, used to movie special effects, this might sound like science fiction. But to students of prophecy, this is documented history. God gave us a "heavenly timetable" so we would know how far along the journey we are.

The Great Earthquake (1755)

The text begins by saying: "And there was a great earthquake" (v. 12). Many earthquakes have occurred throughout history, but students of prophecy identify this one as the Great Lisbon Earthquake, which struck on November 1, 1755.

Why this one? Because it marked the end of the age of medieval persecution and shook the conscience of the world. It was felt across four million square kilometers, from Europe to Africa and even in America. It killed tens of thousands in minutes and reshaped the theology and philosophy of the age. It was the first bell tolling: the end is near.

The Black Sun and the Blood Moon (1780)

The prophecy continues: "The sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood." This was literally fulfilled in the famous Dark Day of May 19, 1780.

In New England, the sun turned inexplicably dark at midday. Chickens went to roost, cattle lowed, and people lit candles for their midday meal, thinking Judgment Day had arrived. That night, the moon appeared blood-red. Science tried to explain it away as smoke from forest fires, but the prophetic precision — occurring right after the end of the "1,260 years" of papal persecution — is undeniable.

The Falling Stars (1833)

The third sign: "And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs" (v. 13). On November 13, 1833, the world witnessed the largest meteor shower in recorded history. The skies of North America lit up for hours. It wasn't one or two shooting stars — it was thousands per minute, falling exactly as the prophecy described: like fruit dropping from a shaken tree.

Frederick Douglass, the famous abolitionist, witnessed the event and wrote: "I knew that it was the sign of the coming of the Son of Man."

Road Signs

Imagine you're driving to a city you've never visited. The GPS says you're getting close. Suddenly you see a sign: "50 km to go." Then another: "20 km to go." Then: "Welcome to the City."

Those signs (1755, 1780, 1833) were God's road signs along the highway of history. They served to awaken the great nineteenth-century movement of Bible study. They shouted: "The persecution is over, the Judgment is about to begin, get ready!"

And today? We live after the signs. We have already passed the earthquake, the darkened sun, and the falling stars. The next event on the list, in verse 14, is: "Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up... and every mountain and island was moved out of its place." That is the return of Jesus. There are no more warning signs left between us and the end. We are living in the overtime of history.

Fear of the Lamb's Face

The chapter closes with humanity's saddest scene. Kings, the rich, the poor, and the mighty run to the caves and cry out to the mountains: "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb!" (v. 16).

Think about that: they would rather be crushed under tons of rock than look upon the face of Jesus. Why? Because nothing is more unbearable than love that was rejected. They are not afraid of a monster; they are afraid of the Lamb. The heavy conscience of having rejected grace turns the Savior into the Judge.

The Million-Dollar Question

The chapter ends with a desperate question left hanging in the air, a cliffhanger: "For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?" (v. 17).

Who will be able to remain standing when the sky rolls up? Who will survive the end of history? Chapter 6 does not give the answer. It ends in the dark, generating an urgent need for a reply.

The answer comes in the next chapter (Chapter 14 of our book). The answer is: those who have the Seal of God.
